No Reserve Important Antique 12th century Japanese - carved wood figure of a seated Buddha. Unkei (1150–1223). Dated 1198 Kamakura period. Carved in the warihagi zukuri technique and seated in the lotus position. Shaka Nyorai seated Buddha with many Heian Kamakura period text. UNKEI'S Signature Hall Marking techniques are used as Raised platform, light weight Box Wood, iron staple fastenings techniques, rock inset crystal eyes, Upwards Facing Left Foot - Moji texts bears the name UNKEI numerous times & Mongaku Shonin, reads - Myoe Shonin with Spring New Year party with much laughing smiling with Gaijin at Kannedadera temple east Koya Kaido road Osaka. - In 1198 Buddhist archives in Japan- Samurai priest Mongaku Shonin gifted Myoe Shonin his favorite student with a UNKEI made Buddha. This figure is believed to be that figure. Provenance - Purchased from a large collection of antique Buddhas disassembled partially assembled purchased Kyoto Japan 2002 - Unkei (1150–1223) is considered one of the greatest Japanese wood sculptors, famous for his lifelike carvings. A large part of his work are Buddhist religious figures but he also portrayed leading monks and scholars of his time., approx 49cm H
